About Us - The History of BioMedical Enterprises, Inc.

Company History

BioMedical Enterprises, Inc. (BME) is a medical device company created to address the changing needs in musculoskeletal medicine.  Located in the beautiful Texas Research Park in San Antonio, Texas, BME was created in 1991 to provide musculoskeletal research service to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and orthopaedic industries. Since inception, BME has applied its understanding of bone healing to the development of minimally invasive orthopaedic instrumentation and implants that elicit a biologic response. BME's seventeen-year history of musculoskeletal research service has generated the expertise and infrastructure to develop, manufacture and distribute products in the U.S. and international markets.

BME Today

Today, BME has become the worldwide market leader in orthopaedic shape changing memory metal implant systems with products such as the OSStaple™ and the Step OSStaple™.  These unique implants use osteosynthesis through memory to apply fixation forces that can be adjusted in the patient to reduce fractures and stimulate bone healing. The cornerstone of BME's system is the exclusive OSSforce™ Implant Controller, a patented bipolar electrical heating device that allows for fine control over the compressive forces generated by our shape memory implants.

BME Tomorrow

Our new product lines are changing the shape of orthopaedics.  We are proud of our products: the OSSpine™ cervical spine fixation system, the OSSArc™ implant that conforms to sloping and irregular bone surfaces, the OSSAnchor™ Grip, the first shape memory staple specifically designed for soft tissue-to-bone fixation;  and the Barbed OSStaple™ (BOSS), a major enhancement to our gold-standard OSStaple™ and Step OSStaple™ lines.  We continue to look forward to our product line extensions and emerging technologies that will continue our history of healthcare contribution for years to come.
